10 of the Most Iconic Looks from the DC Fashion Week Runway

With the beginning of DC Fashion Week arriving, now is the perfect time to look back at some of the beautiful designs from past seasons. DC Fashion Week was created in 2003 by Ean Williams with the intention of increasing economic development in fashion, clothing merchandising, and modeling, along with increasing the visibility of Washington DC, our nation’s capital as a hub for international fashion. Like other fashion weeks, DCFW is held twice a year, once in Fall and once in Spring, with themes and designers changing each season. DC Fashion Week is a staple of the fashion community in the DMV area and has been a space for both emerging and established designers to share their work beside their peers

In the past few years of the event, there have been beautiful pieces shown on the runway. In honor of the beginning of this fall’s fashion week, here are 10 throwback looks that captured my eye.

1. E. Bannister Couture, Menswear Fall/Winter 2020

I’m fully in awe of this look. The craftsmanship and the fabric choice of the top perfectly complement the more simple material of the pants. The styling for this is incredible, and the sunglasses are the perfect touch. The pleats and the texture of the fabric remind me so much of Issey Miyake's work, and I really just can't look away from how stunning this is.

2. House of Falenci'ago, Hall of Fame 2019

There is something so classic about a gown like this. The silver beading and embellishments create a sleek yet whimsical look and the high neck and more traditional shape of the garment combine to create a striking silhouette. The patterns within the gown are so gorgeous, and the geometrical nature creates such a unique feel.

3. Cojor International, International Couture Spring/Summer 2019

This show was inspired by retro elements, which can be seen in the shape of many of the pieces, along with the headpieces and other accessories styled on the runway. This look is such a fantastic color, and the long sleeves and embroidery provide the perfect touch of retro drama. This entire collection is stunning, and the styling is brilliant.

4. House of Sky, International Couture Spring/Summer 2021

House of Sky consistently amazes with incredible knitwear looks, and this was no exception. The neckline and pockets give this dress an effortless and casual feel, but pops of color towards the bottom elevate an already gorgeous piece. The decision to pair this look with a more casual shoe was incredible, it completely captures and further emphasizes the entire aesthetic of this collection, and the coziness mixed in with high fashion.

5. Generation Typo, Emerging Designer Fall/Winter 2022

This collection from Generation Typo integrated classic silhouettes and streetwear-inspired pieces, all while staying true to the image and brand’s look. The iconic red and black were showcased in such creative ways, like in this jacket’s sleeves. The tailoring in this jacket is beautiful and the collection is so cohesive.

6. Obioma, Menswear Spring/Summer 2021

I love a well-tailored jumpsuit and this one is perfect. The pattern and the cut come together perfectly. This pattern was also featured very heavily in this collection as well as the previous season’s and it truly is a staple of Obioma’s designs. For such a bold pattern, this is such a simple, yet polished look.

7. Douglas Says, International Couture Spring Fall/Winter 2022

This absolutely stunning gown uses tiny pops of color in such a brilliant way, with the gloves and the earrings. The juxtaposition of the sequined fabric and the smoother, more satin fabric create one of the most beautiful pieces I’ve seen in a long time. The amount of pure glamour exuding from this gown is off the charts.

8. Roksolana Bogutska, International Couture Spring/Summer 2021

This is such an elegant look, with the embellishment on the front of the dress. There is a sophistication to this look, and the cape emphasizes that, but still provides an eclectic touch. The flowers on the dress and cape complement each other perfectly, and the fur on the cape adds beautiful contrast and definition.

9. Corjor, International Couture Fall/Winter 2022

Corjor’s runway was a masterclass on styling, with such beautiful incorporation of accessories that pulled each look, and the collection as a whole, together. The fabric of this suit is so unique and the body chain complements it perfectly. Corjor showed so many bold looks and colors, yet none of them overpowered each other; instead, they cohesively created a beautiful and versatile collection.

10. Love Allie Style, Emerging Designers Spring/Summer 2021

Love Allie Style utilized a palette of neutral colors and fabrics, but each look had a sense of avant-garde flair. The clean lines of this look paired with the large bow, make such an exciting combination. The monochromatic color palette allows for the tailoring and details to shine.

DC Fashion Week has continuously been a platform for designers, fashion lovers, and DC residents to come together and appreciate the beauty of the looks on the runway. These looks (and countless others) are a part of such a hugely impactful event for the DC Fashion community, and it will be so exciting to see what comes down the runway this year!
