For a garment so tiny, the Miu Miu micro-mini skirt set has been one of the most talked-about moments in fashion over the last few months, and it does not seem to be disappearing from our feeds anytime soon. The set itself is a micro-mini skirt, appearing in a few different materials, paired with a cropped top that matches or corresponds to the skirt.
It’s one of those pieces that seem to be popping up everywhere; some of its most recent appearances with Nicole Kidman styled in it for a W magazine shoot and Paloma Elsesser wearing it for the cover of i-D magazine.
The set has become so popular that an Instagram account was created to document what has lovingly been referred to as the sisterhood of the traveling Miu Miu set. Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, and Emily Ratajowski are among those featured in the set and on the account.
Miu Miu has had a certain viral ability with its campaigns in the past (remember the way it took over Tumblr and Rookie Mag) and with the presence of Instagram and Twitter, and the effect social media has on fashion, it is not a surprise that this campaign has flourished the way that we have seen it. The last week of February alone had around 900 searches per day for the coveted skirt set, according to an article from Fashionista.
I remember when the collection featuring the now-iconic set (Miu Miu Spring 2022 Ready to Wear) dropped this past October, my roommate, Sofia, and I had an amazing conversation while we made dinner about the practicality of the set versus the high fashion value of it, pointing out the influence early 2000s fashion had over the garment. This set represents a larger conversation about the trend revival cycle and the lasting impact of a successful campaign.
With 2000s fashion returning to prominence, it is no surprise that the mini skirt is emerging as one of the season’s most-worn looks. The micro-mini skirt and the larger collection as a whole reflect aspects of the 2000s style (the tiny skirts, the school uniform aesthetic a la Britney Spears's “Baby One More Time”) and also tie in elements of 90s fashion (the leather, some of the long trousers, and the tailoring).
Miu Miu recently debuted their most recent collection, Fall 2022 Ready-to-Wear, and it is clear that the skirt set’s moment is far from over. Miuccia Prada, creative director of Miu Miu, presented a collection that could be considered the Spring/Summer collection’s sportier younger sister, with the iconic mini skirt appearing in more of a pleated tennis skirt style. The collection was met with some criticism, with claims that Miu Miu wasn’t showing anything too different from its Spring/Summer show.
While yes, the concept is similar, Miuccia Prada demonstrated that when something is successful and has the ability to dominate the fashion world, it can be done differently. We have seen this happen before with Miu Miu, where something from a campaign would become so popular that it would be brought back in a similar style in a different campaign (their incredible platform ballet flats come to mind when I think about this.)
Also, with the trend cycle moving as fast as it has been, especially with a rise in social media fashion, it is commendable that Miu Miu decided to slow down the process, choosing to elevate a piece and work off of a garment with the ability to last more than one season. TikTok is often brought into the conversation about the rapid speed that the trend cycle has been moving in and because of the nature of the platform and the influence it has shown on what is “trendy,” there is more of a tendency to focus on shopping for trends, rather than versatility and longevity.
There is no doubt that we will continue to see all iterations of the Miu Miu micro-mini skirt throughout the next few months, and hopefully new variations of it in some of Miu Miu’s future collections. I really love this skirt and I am so excited to see where it will pop up next; yesterday I saw a Barbie doll wearing a custom version. A huge round of applause to Miu Miu, this tiny skirt really is everything.
