Less is always more.
The start of a new season means a new fashion trend arising, and this fall and winter season, 1990s minimalism is back. The chic and timeless street style looks worn in the 90s are now being seen on countless models and celebrities, and it seems the essence of understatement and class from that era is back.
Most fashion trends tend to fade out, only to be revived several years later. As recently seen with the resurgence in early 2000s style making a comeback in 2020, the same can now be said about 90s fashion.
As seen on multiple runways this season such as Miu Miu, chocolate brown smart suits were spotted on the models for their ready-to-wear collection, something previously seen approaching the 90’s in Saint Laurent’s pre-fall runway.
In Gucci’s latest holiday campaign featuring Kendall Jenner and Jessica Chastain, a key color highlighted for this season is a dark burgundy. A timeless color that previously debuted in the 90’s and was a crucial color to the sophisticated yet edgy aesthetic during that era. Many designers such as Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel in the 90’s introduced burgundy to the fall 1990 runway featuring several looks in this shade of red. The revival of burgundy in today’s fashion highlights the comeback in 90s minimalism fashion and the elegance of wearing warmer tones in the fall and winter.
This year’s fall and winter runways, specifically from Miu Miu and Gucci, are able to highlight a return in fashion on high-quality, functional styles with more muted colors such as neutrals and burgundy reds.
As fashion stylist Oriona Robb has once said “Burgundy is for everyone”.
With the constant rise and fall of fashion trends, it’s important to keep in mind that you don’t need to follow every trend and buy into what celebrities and influencers are wearing. Remaining sustainable by purchasing second-hand clothing or simply sticking with what you personally like is always more fashionable than fitting into a certain mold. While it can be fun to experiment with your style during the different seasons, remaining authentic and making conscious choices is essential. This fall and winter season is all about the '90s model-off-duty style that has made its way back in fashion. To dress in this style without purchasing a whole new wardrobe, try exploring the closets of older family members or shopping at vintage and thrift stores for pre-loved pieces. A good idea of how to dress in that style without purchasing an entire new wardrobe is to explore the wardrobes of older family member's or shop at vintage and thrift stores to get pre-loved pieces.
