What Would the Women in Sex and the City Wear Today?

Take a look at what the characters from the iconic show would wear if they were in their 30s today.

It’s been 25 years since Sex and The City first graced our screens and yet, its influence on culture and fashion stand the test of time. In the modern era, women of all generations try to emulate the style of the four fearless female leads: Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York, Miranda Hobbes, and Samantha Jones. These four women have inspired fashion fanatics everywhere to dress in a way that feels the most true for them.

Warning: SATC spoilers ahead!

CARRIE BRADSHAW

The show’s main (and often problematic) protagonist Carrie Bradshaw always marched to the beat of her own drum. Whether she was chasing after emotionally unavailable men or going out for drinks with the girls, she always looked fabulous while doing so. Because Carrie’s style is so incredibly unique, it’s hard to imagine what she would put together today.

Although Carrie never followed trends, she has certainly inspired them. A quick scroll through Danish stylist Emili Sindlev’s Instagram shows how inspired she is by Carrie. In some posts, it feels as if Sindlev walked right off the set of SATC and onto my Instagram feed. Nonetheless, Carrie’s style is often odd (like sweat shorts and heels?) and hard to emulate (who spends $40,000 on Manolo Blahniks?), yet I always found myself envious of her glorious closet.

Carrie in 2023 would still have a remarkable stylethe kind where you can look at something and say “That’s so Carrie.” I think she would still wear her beloved $500 Manolo Blahnik heels but maybe would pair them with some athleisure. She would also still be a fan of floral appliques, and would most likely wear them as a choker rather than a hat.

Some current trends I could see Carrie in are:

  • Frilly/ruched blouses

  • Sheer paneling dresses

  • Long flowy skirts / mini skirts

  • Sporty meets corporate / Girly meets alternative

  • Ribbons and flower accessories / opera gloves

  • Cowboy boots

  • Slip dresses and leather jackets

As mentioned, I think Emili Sindlev best encapsulates Carrie’s trademark style. I think her favorite brand to shop at, when she isn’t thrifting vintage Chanel and Roberto Cavalli, would be Sandy Liang.

SAMANTHA JONES

Way ahead of her time, the sassy Samantha Jones was known for her confident and daring style. Her style was a direct reflection of her character’s blazing personality. She is a savvy PR manager and a major flirt who could get any man she wants. However, she never dimmed her shine to coddle her lover’s ego. So, it's no wonder why she delivers one of the series’ most iconic lines“I love you, but I love me more.”

Samantha wasn’t a fan of commitment, but she was a huge fan of color, pattern, and bold pairings. She also loved statement jewelry (remember Charlotte’s second wedding?), especially earrings.

In 2023, Samantha would continue her love of monochromatic looks. One of my favorite looks from the entire series was her hot pink, Hillary-Clinton-but-hotter power suitcomplete with a star broach and big statement earrings.

Some current trends I could see Samantha rocking are:

  • Monochrome business sets

  • Color-blocking

  • Fuzzy details (cuffs of blazer/ in the strap of a stiletto)

  • Metallic/shimmery fabric

  • Mixed print

One celebrity that best emulates Samantha’s style would be model Gigi Hadid. One brand Samantha would love is Sacks Potts, especially an over-the-top shearling coat (probably in hot pink or electric blue).

MIRANDA HOBBES

Everyone’s favorite fiery redhead Miranda Hobbes arguably had the biggest style evolution in the show. Oftentimes the voice of reason when it came to men, careers, and life in general, Miranda’s style saw the biggest change as she experimented with her sense of style.

Initially, Miranda’s style was very tomboy-ish and corporate (seeing as she was a corporate lawyer), often displaying harsh lines that exaggerated her tough love personality. Contrary to most SATC fans, I actually really like her style from the earlier seasons. It sets her apart from the rest of the girls, and I always love altering menswear in new ways to compliment a woman’s personality.

Some current trends Miranda would look great in are:

  • Oversized blazers

  • Aviator coats

  • Denim

  • Streetwear

  • Loafers

  • Chunky shoes/boots/sneakers

  • Puffer jackets

One celebrity that reminds me most of Miranda is Cate Blanchett. One fashion house Miranda would love splurging on is Brunello Cuccinelli because of the brand’s impeccable tailoring.

CHARLOTTE YORK

The original lover girl, Charlotte York is the embodiment of the color baby pink. A Ralph Lauren sweetheart (she was a teen model at the store in New Haven!), Charlotte is the queen of classic style. Often the dreamer of the group, and at times the most rigid, Charlotte loved to express her feminine flair.

Although she had some of the worst luck when it came to men, she always stayed true to herselfespecially when it came to her love of femininity. Charlotte is a hopeless romantic, and her preppy, hyper-feminine, and Meredith Blake-esque fashion expresses that beautifully. Even when she dared to dress in more colorful looks, she always kept it classy.

Some trends that scream Charlotte are:

  • Colorful preppy

  • Frilly collars

  • Puff sleeves

  • Traditional silhouettes

  • “Old Money” aesthetic

  • Cardigans over dresses

  • Vintage Chanel-inspired

One celeb that is very Charlotte to me (style-wise) is Meghan Markle. One brand that Charlotte would adore today is House of CB.
