What Your Male-Manipulator-Sneaky-Link Will Be Wearing This Fall

A guide on men's fashion trends for this fall

Ah, fall. The chill in the air and the pumpkin spice in the wind means it is about time to get cozy with a special someone. It is also about time for men’s runway season, which is an excellent predictor of what will be in trend for stylish masculine dressers this fall. If that is not you, keep reading for a sneak peak of what that fashion forward dude-bro in your life will step out in.

This autumn, we will see many echoes of the late ‘90s in trend for menswear. In terms of formal wear, the double-breasted suit is having a moment. It was shown prominently in the runways of Gucci, Giorgio Armani, and Louis Vuitton. GQ is praising statement print ties and thick belts, which could style well for a formal outfit or a more casual one. Following fashion week, Vogue identified a trend of snazzy men's tops perfect for modern nightlife. A loose collared shirt in linen or silk is reappearing on many runways as well as sheer shirts with floral or lace detail. Vogue also reiterated the continuing trend of deconstructed suit wear, which is currently everywhere in high fashion. Critics are calling the trend "the next nine to five uniform," — an ode to its avant-garde imagination of the classic suit silhouette. Dior, Fendi, and Celine showed a lot of sheer in their fall collections, with Dior and Fendi taking it in a more structured direction and Celine pairing it with a grungier, more maximalist aesthetic.

For casual wear, grunge is in. Designers are channeling style icons of ‘90s grunge like Kurt Cobain and Lenny Kravitz with details like plaid, thick sole boots, and denim. In addition to Celine, Givenchy and Dolce and Gabbana both showed a lot of grunge inspired looks on the runway. Vogue France also predicts beanies will be in, but that should not surprise us (Beanies? For fall? Groundbreaking). It does seem like the familiar stand-by is getting a new twist, however, with individual touches like pattern, cropped cut, or side flaps making appearances on many runways. Lastly, in the same way that subculture uniforms like skate gear and mechanic gear have, in the past, made their way into men's fashion, motorcycle gear inspired looks are all the rage. Biker-esque racing stripe pants, driving gloves, and leather jackets can be seen in the new collections of Gucci, Dsquared, and Louis Vuitton.

Finally, the colors seen heavily on the runway were military green, various shades of brown, and a fun one: bordeaux. Military green’s popularity is not a surprise, given the color’s long association with fall in the fashion world and the ongoing trendiness of green. Again, brown is always an expected but welcome hue for autumn fashion. Gucci’s Fall collection featured brown and khaki green, but also featured a lot of bright colors, which is a current and increasingly prevalent trend. Many other designers, however, draw from the jewel tone fashion trend which recurs every few years to bust out shades of wine and dark cherry. Watch out for this color, as Vogue France says it is “set to dethrone black.
